KUMU All-Birch Custom

The collection that has built the reputation of KUMU drums. As the name suggests, all drums are custom-made to order in Turenki from 100% Finnish birch. This fine and valuable wood material is responsibly harvested and PEFC/FSC certified. With an almost unlimited color selection and the widest range of sizes on the market, you can even choose the drum depth to within a quarter of an inch.

KUMU All-Birch Custom drums are also available with wooden hoops, with two models to choose from: ClassicWoodHoop and SuperWoodHoop. Wooden hoops add “wood” to the sound: warmth and pleasant resonance, with the bonus of a unique rimshot sound and a stunning appearance. KUMU wooden hoops are handcrafted individually from tight and durable Finnish birch.

Below are various features of KUMU All-Birch Custom drums from which you can choose the ones that suit you best.

KUMU All-Birch Custom Shells

KUMU Original

The original, thin shell that created the “Kumu sound” concept is the most popular and pro-duced. Suitable for all types of playing, offering a rich and warm sound even at very low vol-umes. The toms have a 4-ply construction with a thickness of 3.8 mm, plus thin 1.8 mm inner SoulRing reinforcement strips. The bass drums have a 5-ply construction with a thickness of 5 mm, plus SoulRings.

KUMU 66S

The second most popular shell model, featuring six layers of one-millimeter-thick birch ve-neers, with four layers oriented vertically and two horizontally. This construction yields a quick-response, low-pitched sound that is also well-suited for hard-hitting playing. The same shell structure is suitable for toms, bass drums, and snares.

KUMU Bearing Edges

The bearing edge significantly affects the drum’s sound and tunability, comparable to the bridge of a guitar or violin. All KUMU All-Birch Custom drum bearing edges are hand-finished to be smooth and silky and finally treated with paraffin oil. The standard edge has a 45-degree inner cut with a slight rounding on the outer edge. The edge is narrower on smaller drums and wider on larger ones. Other options include a 30-degree edge with a sharper peak or a rounded “full round” edge.

KUMU All-Birch Custom Finish Options

  • SatinSound: A satin matte, durable, and elegant oil-wax finish.
  • GlossTone: A mirror-like polished lacquer finish that enhances color depth. Ten layers of lac-quer make it a more labor-intensive and therefore more expensive option compared to Sat-inSound.
  • Wrap: A classic drum finish that is highly durable, available in a variety of patterns.

KUMU All-Birch Custom Colors

All All-Birch Custom drums are hand-dyed according to the customer’s preferences. Colors can be chosen freely, including various shades and gradients. Special colors and patterns are also possible. Colors can be viewed in the photo gallery on the website, though a comprehen-sive color chart is nearly impossible to create. Numerous color samples on actual wood are available at the Kumu drum showroom.

KUMU All-Birch Custom Lugs

Lugs are the distinguishing feature of a drum! Kumu drums’ unique lugs are made of chromed solid steel with a very small “footprint” to allow the shell to resonate as freely as possible. Over the years, various lug models have been available; currently, two stylish options are of-fered: the straight D-lug in chrome, or the same model with a wooden veneer, with the color of the veneer being customizable.

KUMU All-Birch Custom Tom Hoops

  • The most common option is the Steel Powerhoop, a 2.3 mm steel hoop, a reliable all-around choice. It provides a lively, clear sound and precise tunability.
  • KUMU ClassicWoodHoop: A traditional thinner wood hoop with claw hooks.
  • KUMU SuperWoodHoop: A thicker wood hoop model with tuning screws running through it.
  • KUMU bass drums always feature a wood hoop made from ten birch veneers.

SideHole

For KUMU All-Birch Custom bass drums, you can opt for a SideHole, a mic hole on the side of the drum. This way, there’s no need to make a hole in the front head. An intact head provides a lot of extra sound and also looks much better!

Kumurim

KUMU All-Birch Custom toms feature the Kumurim mounting system, which allows the drum to resonate in the best possible way. The Kumurim mounting plate is stylishly treated to match the drum’s color. The standard mount fits all L-rod style holders, but you can choose a different mount if you prefer.

Mounting the Rack Toms

KUMU All-Birch Custom rack toms are usually attached with a clamp to a cymbal stand or a separate tom stand. The bass drum produces a slightly better sound without the weight of the toms. However, a tom holder can be installed on the bass drum. There are models available for one or two toms. You can also mount the tom on a snare stand, just be careful not to over-tighten it, which could dampen the drum’s resonance.
