About Kumu

I founded Soitinverstas Kunikunda in 1984, initially operating in the former Kutila school in Iittala, Häme. I made small kanteles, and percussion instruments, and did subcontract woodturning work. I also studied piano tuning and repair under my father’s guidance.

In 1986, I moved to Hämeenlinna, where the instrument-making business expanded to in-clude string instruments and traditional instruments, alongside drums. I developed drum shell manufacturing techniques and built or commissioned machines for this purpose.

Around the turn of the millennium, I adopted the name KUMU.

In the early 2000s, KUMU frequently had its own booth at Frankfurt Musik Messe and attended the London Drummer Live in 2016.

Between 2014 and 2018, KUMU participated in trade shows in the United States nine times, including the Hollywood Drum Show, Chicago Drum Show, and the largest event in the indus-try, NAMM.

My family has been a great help, especially on trade show trips, but all Kumu drums are made by myself.

In 2018, KUMU moved to larger premises in Turenki, Janakkala. Our factory building has plen-ty of space for all production stages. The showroom allows you to test various drum options. Welcome to visit!
